The Skolt Sámi Language Workshop 2015
         9–11 October 2015, Porotila Sanila, Kirakkajärvi/Finland

Organized in collaboration between:
Østsamisk museum (Neiden/Norway) and University of Freiburg (Germany)

Target group:
– Skolt Sámi language learners from Russia and Norway
– Skolt Sámi language students at the University of Oulu

Goal:
The goal of the workshop is to let Skolt Sámi university students work with beginning Skolt
Sámi language learners. Whereas the students will practice preparing and implementing
their lessons, language learners will especially profit from being exposed to a lively Skolt
Sámi cultural and language environment.
The workshop will also be an arena to discuss the challenges concerning language teaching
and learning in areas where Skolt Sámi language is not in daily use any longer. There will also
be group discussions about other language related topics such as language standardization
and orthography in a situation where Skolt Sámi dialects differ considerably from each other
in the three countries.

Background of participants:
Language learners come from Norway and Russia. Some of them have participated in Skolt
Sámi language courses, but most of them have very limited language skills.
Practically all of them are learning Skolt Sámi as a second language and they live in areas
where the language is not in daily use.
