“When the Norwegians became Christians they also learned to read and write.” This is a version of events that may still be taught nowadays. Nothing could be more inaccurate. The fact is that by the time the Scandinavians became acquainted with the literate Roman script they had been reading and writing for eight hundred years. They might be described as illiterate in a strict sense of the word, but they were far from being unlettered. Their alphabet was the runic alphabet. With the introduction of Christianity, Scandinavia witnessed the meeting of two script cultures, runic and Roman. How did this cultural encounter turn out?
