"Swedish workers’ literature in the early 20th century in the context of the Protestant revivalist movement and Protestant aesthetics"

Rodrigo Edvard Araujo Silva, Strasbourg

My project explores how Protestantism – its aesthetics, practices, and ideas – has influenced workers’ literature. In particular I examine how work was cast as a meaningful calling in early 20th Swedish workers’ literature by interpreting the symbolic importance of work in the context of both the Protestant revivalist movement and Protestant aesthetics. Workers' movements were often anticlerical (though not always anti-religious) and oriented towards the universalism of socialism and communism, rather than Lutheran universalism. And yet many literary works highlighted social changes by using models, ideas or other forms of inspiration from the revival movements. Indeed, this literature refers to ideas, which have also been prominent in such religious contexts, such as the existential importance of work for the individual towards the eternal and the responsibility of the individual. Among the authors in whose works I will be exploring these themes are Maria Sandel and Martin Koch.
