"Apparatus of Longing: Engagement and Transcendence in Scandinavian Modernist Poetry"

Emmanuel Reymond, Strasbourg

I examine how Scandinavian Modernist poetry is characterized by, on the one hand, a political commitment and participation in social discourse, and, on the other hand, an interest in developing new forms of expressions meant to counter the felt loss of values, caused alternatively by the secular technocratic state, the constant threat by Cold war’s nuclear or fusion bombs, ecological menace or scientific coldness.

Many poets try to explore language as a field of tension between engagement and transcendence, showing how words and grammars are both an obstacle and a tool to access a truth seen as larger than everyday reality and as leading to a renewed sense of commitment. By investigating these tensions and tendencies I aim to reconstruct hidden religious subtexts and to connect them to the cultural history of Protestant aesthetic ideas.
